Welcome Remarks Essay In behalf of the graduating class, it is my honour/pleasure to welcome all of you this afternoon to this solemn and joyous occasion. To our parents, guardians, friends and family, I express the deepest appreciation to you not only for your presence today but also for your endless love and support to us. I also like to extend our gratitude to our beloved teachers, faculty, and members of the ASIST for the patience and guidance you have shown to us which we will carry to face the upcoming chapters of our life. The next stage of our life is about to begin but without the supports from you, we may not have made it to this day. So again, thank you and welcome. To my fellow graduates, congratulation, I am honour to be here today graduating with all of you. These past four years has been an unforgettable journey which prepared us for what the future holds. Letââ¬â¢s take a moment to reflect on the bonds we developed during our time. Many of us will surely miss these years, on how we survived here together at ASIST, and the memorable and influential moments of our lives. We began high school as children and today we leave and say good bye as adults. Remember, four years ago we walked into this halls as nervous as we were on the first day of school we were so called the freshmen before and now here we are weââ¬â¢re leaving the school behind. We say good bye to our four sided classroom which we have known too well, to our 30 minutes lunches, to our teachers and for those who become part of it. The most important good bye we will say is to each other and the past we created as a class, and now we welcome the opportunities of the future. Today, itââ¬â¢s not only does this class graduate, but we also leave behind significant talents, wisdom and legacy. The skills and talents that once roamed these halls will be set out into this world, and I am confident they will be put to good use. We owe all of these to our beloved alma mater. Thanks to ASIST for providing us a high quality education, for helping us enhance these abilities. We are privileged to have attended this school. I am sure that the fine education that we received will stand us in good stead time and again. Thus I say so my dear friends let us not stop gaining knowledge. If we have done all that we could in high school, let us further our study by putting even more effort into our own chosen paths. For our knowledge is yet to growà into true maturity. But for now, let us sit back, think and reflect. As we go on with our graduation rites today, it is time to gather all that we have learned and think about them. And celebrate for all our efforts in making it into this level. For surely, we would not have achieved a great feat such as this without the wits, the power, the strength, the brains and the dedication that would usher us into further development. Before I let my emotion sweep me away I would like to tell all my classmates who are sitting here with a square piece of cardboard on their head just one little thing. Thank you for all the memories. The fights, the team efforts, the assignments, the laughter, the tears, the prom, the photos; all of them. Wherever we go and whatever we do, may we always be friends when we meet again. We might have ended up today another chapter of our life, and soon to travel our own path but always remember that, ââ¬Å"Every ending is just a new beginningâ⬠. "But at least now people are aware. -Isaac, Zapatista Leader Since the Beginning (CNN Wolrd Article) Introduction: The indigenous community of Chiapas, Mexico has been struggling for hundreds of years, ever since the inception of the Spanish conquest. The Indians of Mexico (and especially of Chiapas) have been dehumanized and have been rejected of constitutional rights throughout history. For this reason, and other related reasons, the indigenous population of Chiapas has suffered from hunger, lack of health care access, poverty, loss of agricultural land, and racism over the past four centuries. In particular, the majority of Mayan populations in Chiapas are often forced to bear injustices and infractions of natural human rights. Set deep in the thriving green and fertile jungles of southeastern Mexico, Zapatistas have maintained a resistance movement to stand up for the injustices endured by the approximately 2.3 million people who live and die in the Chiapas countryside. A war broke out in Southern Mexico on New Yearââ¬â¢s Day of 1994, 10 years ago. In its first military actions, the Ejà ©rcito Zapatista de Liberacià ³n Nacional (EZLN) demanded from the Mexican federal government democracy, liberty, and justice for all Mexicans. Led by Subcomandante Marcos, the Zapatistas demanded autonomy from the government, legal recognition of Indians in Mexico, demilitarization, and the redistribution of agricultural lands. But time and time again these rights continue to be denied. No president has been able to reach an agreement with the Zapatistas. The war still continues, although the negotiations have halted. The bloodshed still continues, and yet there is still no solution to this conflict. A solution that satisfies both the Mexican government and the Zapatistas is attainable. A proposed Solution involves a 4 part solution to the four demands of the Zapatistas: health care, indigenous rights, demilitarization, and redistribution of land. But first, a comprehensive history and causes for the lack of success of the movement must be discussed. . The Stanford Cardinals men's basketball team won, 82-69 over visitng Arizona State on Thursday night. With the win, the Cardinals ended a two-game losing streak and continued their ninth straight win at home. This was an important game for the Pac-10 Conference teams. After the game, Stanford (9-4,13-9) remained a game behind co-leaders UCLA and California. Stanford senior, Matt Haryasz, who scored 22 points, said: ââ¬Å"Right now we just need to win. We're only a game out of first and we think we got robbed out of one at U of A.We're going to be pumped up to play. â⬠Haryasz, who has dealt with vision problems stemming from a poke to the eye two weeks ago at Oregon State, became the 35th player in school history to reach 1,000 points, following Hernandez, who reached the milestone earlier this season. Haryasz also became the 13th player to record 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. ââ¬Å"This injury has put things in perspective for me,â⬠Haryasz said. ââ¬Å"Sometimes you ta ke things for granted like always being able to see perfectly. To go down with the eye injury was tough.It's nice to see again. â⬠Stanford's Chris Hernandez scored 12 points and extended his consecutive free throw streak to 34. Hernandez is now seven shy of Todd Lichti's 41 straight, and 15 short of the school record held by Ryan Mendez. Also a senior at Stanford, Dan Grunfeld, scored a career-high 31 points against Arizona on Thursday. He made 9 of 11 shots from the field and all 11 of his free throws. He now has a total of 914 career points for Stanford. Grunfeld, a first-team all-conference pick last year, injured his knee last Feb. 2 and had surgery on Feb. 23. He missed the final nine games of the season, but his shooting and scoring have both been off from last year. ââ¬Å"The fact that we won is more important, but it is special for me as far as coming back from an injury. â⬠Grinfeld said. ââ¬Å"I'm wearing a lighter brace now, and it's nice to be able to do thi ngs I wasn't able to do before. â⬠Grunfeld began wearing the new brace in Saturday's loss at Gonzaga. Cardinal coach Treant Johnson said of Grunfeld and his new brace, ââ¬Å"He's had a lot of bounce the last week.I thought at Gonzaga he looked real good. I will use my model to resolve the case and compare it with Dr. Buccis model in assessing the effectiveness of my model. Classical decision-making A number of classical decisionââ¬Å"making model entail the outcome of an action justifying the means, however, the virtue theory is of the view that morality of a decision surpasses the duty to do what is right (Rae Wong, 2012). In this case, virtues are paramount in defining ones course of action that is coined in the ethics of character. In regard to case 6.3 that have chosen to work on, I will analyze it thoroughly and resolve it based on my model. In Case 6.3: Starbucks and Fair Trade Coffee, the overlying issue is the sale of Fair Trade Coffee in enhancing social responsibility. Given that Starbucks is a leading company and believed to be socially responsible it attracts demands to include fair trade coffee in its sales. From a social responsibility point of view, the calls to promote free trade coffee makes a lot of sense in promoting fair prices for suppliers and growers of coffee in poor countries. Also, the call for free trade coffee is hinged on the fact that it enhances sustainable and environment-friendly farming practices. However, the implementation of the call for free trade coffee presents a set of new challenges. Going on with the move may force customers to pay more for the free trade coffee by the retailers passing on the costs of the free trade coffee to the customers. If a retailer chooses to absorb the high costs that could otherwise lead to high prices, such a move will reduce the retailers profits. The stakeholders likely to be affected by the issue at hand are customers, suppliers and growers of coffee in Latin America, and the general public. For instance, if less free trade coffee is sold, poor farmers will continue to suffer in terms of low pays, however, if the call is implemented, the customers will have to pay higher prices against their readiness and willingness. The issue came about by the activist organizations mounting pressure on Starbucks to sell Fair Trade Coffee, following fair trade initiative of promoting fair prices for coffee growers and suppliers from poor countries. In this case, farmers, especially from poor countries, have a right to fair prices, but sustaining those prices is equally a challenge. Moving on with a Free Trade Coffee presents a financial challenge, where Starbucks may have to compromise its financial status through reduced profits. Altogether, striking a balance in implementing the call for Free Trade Coffee presents an ethical dilemma that may prove somehow difficult to arrive at a solution. In resolving the above ethical dilemma, my moral reasoning will be based on the virtue theory in regard to my actions being defined by my virtues (Rae Wong, 2012). Using the emotivism model I may advise Starbucks to have a considerable increase in the sale of Free Trade Coffee because my emotions towards Starbucks exploiting poor farmers would inform my morality decision. In my conviction, I think what I feel for the poor farmers is justifiable, even if in reality it may not be fully feasible. From a virtue model point of view, I may interrogate my feelings further and see the wise thing to do in resolving the ethical dilemma. I think the wise thing, in this case, is to consider outcomes of both choices and my responsibility in making a wise decision. By virtue of justice may tell me to champion for an increment of Free Trade Coffee to enhance fair prices for the poor coffee farmers, whereas, on the other hand, the virtue of justice may restrain me from advocating for more Free Trad e Coffee because customers will be charged highly. It is important to understand it is always not possible to make a decision that may please everyone but is important to make one that promotes ones virtues (Beach Connely, 2005). In this regard, I will advise Starbuck to increase the sale of Free Trade Coffee in order to enhance fair prices for the poor coffee farmers, although this may call for a small sacrifice on the part of their profits and look a little bit unjust to the customers in terms of higher prices. Dr. Buccis Model for Ethical Decision-Making (ETHIC2) The ETHIC2 model by Dr. Bucci will give me a wider perspective of the situation and possible ways of resolving it. The underpinnings of my ethical point of view are fair prices for the poor farmers and also what can be perceived as just profits for Starbucks to guarantee the increased sale of Free Trade Coffee. I believe God created us equally, and in fairness, we must not treat others unfairly in a manner seemingly exploitative, with the business supposed to reveal the glory of God by doing what is right. In the book of Colossians 3: 17, the Bible says, And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving than ks to God the Father through him. The scripture forms the foundation of my theology of business, in which business should do everything that praises God, and being fair and just, in this case, is a way of proclaiming the glory of the Lord. The principles upon which I will make choices are consideration of impact, nonmaleficence, and fairness. The standards of behavior that will guide my on-going decisions are respect of opposite opinions, and exercising compromise when necessary. In prioritizing my values, I will start with unselfishness, integrity and followed by balance. Unselfishness, in this case, entails being considerate of others needs, integrity involves doing what is just and fair, and balance on their end is enhancing equality of involved parties. The order is developed by analyzing the situation at hand in light of the principles I have chosen to guide me in making a choice. The issue at hand is: Is it ethical to expand the sale of Free Trade Coffee at the expense of increased prices for customers and reduced profits for Starbucks? The consideration of outcomes will be critical in resolving the issue. The possible consequences of emphasizing the increase in Free Trade Coffee to enhance fairness for the poor farmers will come at a disadvantage of the customers as well as Starbucks. My value of fairness will stand out in the laid out consequences by ensuring that it does not harm others. I advocate for balance as I try to push for fairness in that the action of seeking fairness for the poor fairness may result in unfair pricing for the customers. Conclusively, my model was helpful in analyzing the issue in the case and laying out the related facts such as the stakeholders affected. However, I realized that my model was inadequate in helping me think deeply compared to Dr. Buccis model. I think my values were aligned with guiding my decision.
